Youth Racing Opportunities
The youth racing boat of choice, up until ages fourteen to sixteen, from Santa Barbara to Cabrillo Beach, is the US Sabot. Racing opportunities are US Sabots Class organized events, such as the High Point Series and the US Sabot Nationals, and regional yacht club regattas. From ages fourteen to sixteen, the youth racing boats of choice are Lasers and FJs. There are many Laser and FJ regattas in neighboring harbors, as well as nationally. Lasers and FJs are used at the high school and collegiate levels. Lasers are also used in Olympic competition.
The Foundation supports junior racing by holding racing practices, providing boats for the High Point Series regattas, and sponsoring Thundering Thursday Night Races and BBQ,

Racing Team Practice The PCYF Racing Team meets regularly and holds practices throughout the year to improve their skills and prepare for High Point regattas. Sailors all skill levels, from beginner to advanced, are encouraged to participate. Along with on-the-water drills and short practice races, the team also reviews sailing technique, strategy, and racing rules in off-the-water sessions.
The dates and time of racing practices vary. Boats for regattas are provided by the Youth Foundation. Even if you cant make the High Point Series, we encourage you to join us for the practices.
To participate in sailing team practices, you must contact racing Coach Craig Wilson and complete a 2008 Youth Acknowledgement and Waiver.

HIGH POINT SERIES
What is the High Point Series
All PCYF participants, from beginner to advanced, are encouraged to participate in the High Point Series, ten regattas from February to November, sponsored by US Sabot Association. Racing takes place in a wide variety of conditions with venues in King Harbor, Los Angeles Harbor, Marina Del Rey, Westlake, Channel Islands Harbor, Ventura Harbor, and Santa Barbara Harbor hosting different regattas.
To accommodate sailors of all levels, racers are divided into three fleets, A, B, and C, according to racing ability and experience.
|
How the High Point Series is scored
Each of the ten regattas is scored individually and trophies are awarded to the top finishers of each fleet. Additionally, each regatta participant is awarded High Points, the number of boats he or she placed in front of in the regatta. High Points are tracked each regatta for all regatta participants at all ten High Point events. During the tenth High Point Series regatta, traditionally held in November in Channel Islands Harbor, trophies are awarded not only to regatta leaders but also to the overall to High Point Series winners. In addition, Iron man awards are also awarded to those who have attended all ten regattas of the series.
The Youth Foundation can supply the boat and racing sails for any PCYF junior sailor and can transport the boat and equipment to the regatta site. Each sailor is responsible for assisting in loading and unloading boats on the trailer and arranging their own transportation to and from the regatta site.

Even if you can't make the High Point Series, we encourage you to join us for the practices. There is a no fee to participate.
